Jim Freeman enrolled as a freshman at Point Loma College in the fall of 1978. He had been an All-CIF performer in high school and was considered one of the best players in San Diego upon exiting the high school ranks. As a freshman he immediately proved himself to be a prime time player on one of the truly great Crusader basketball teams.
Freeman played the guard position and at 6’3” was able to play both the point and shooting guard positions. He combined tremendous ability with an outstanding work ethic—a combination that usually leads to success. Freeman’s all-around game on offense, defense and rebounding inspired his teams to many victories. His ability and aggressive style of play also led to many individual honors and much praise from opposing coaches. While at Point Loma College, Freeman was twice selected the team’s Most Inspirational Player. He won the CSA Sportsmanship Award, was all-league, all-district and a member of the NCCAA All-Region team. In 1980-81, Freeman was an academic All-American and the Meguiar Award winner. He was ranked ninth on the all-time scoring list for a time and held the record for best free throw percentage at 86.1 percent.
Freeman graduated with honors in psychology with a 3.71 grade point average. After graduation he spent two years in Munich as a player/coach in a professional league. Freeman was also able to become fluent in German and earned his certified financial planner license. He returned to San Diego to work for A.L. Williams.
The award for Outstanding Achievement by an Athlete was presented to Freeman by Steve Foster.
