From 1984 through 1989, PLNC’s women’s athletics and the name Shannon Anderson were readily connected in success. Her main sport was basketball as evidenced by the school record she set at the time for all-time leading scorer and rebounder in PLNC women’s basketball history. Anderson led her teams in back-to-back 20-win seasons in her junior and senior year, the first in school history. She finished her career with 1,782 points and 969 rebounds.
In a day of specialization, she still found time and skill to compete two years in cross country and one year in track. She scored significant points for both teams in District Three Championships. Anderson was also a member of the women’s tennis team for two years. Her brightest performance was when she beat the number four seed in the district tournament. Her only loss was to the Westmont doubles team in the final match.
The women won the district championship and went to nationals in Kansas City for the first time. At nationals, Anderson won the first two rounds going further than any teammate. The mark has only been surpassed by Sue Hughey Fox. Anderson was three times selected as basketball MVP, twice named All-GSAC and three times All-District Three. Said Coach Bill Olin, “She was a great one-on-one player with prolific scoring abilities and yet she was a tremendous team player as well.”
Anderson went on to teach physical education at Point Loma High School where she also coached basketball and track.
The award for Outstanding Achievement as an Athlete was presented to Anderson by Jim Bond.
