Steve Bruce arrived at PLNC at a great time for Crusader basketball. His versatility as a guard, forward and center gave Coach Ben Foster resources to make significant adjustments and thus created mismatches for opponents.
In his sophomore year, Bruce was named the Meguiar Outstanding Male Athlete. He finished his senior year be grabbing 260 rebounds (7.4 rpg) and scoring 631 points (18.3 ppg). His career totals of 1,491 points and 679 rebounds placed him at eighth for all-time scoring and 13th for all-time rebounding.
Bruce’s peers, competitors and opposing coaches recognized his greatness and bestowed many accolades on him which include: three times All-GSAC, the first GSAC Player of the Year and three times all-district, capped off with an NAIA All-American Honorable Mention. Bruce led the Crusaders to three consecutive NCCAA National Championships in 1985, 86 and 87, twice making the NCCAA All-American team. He was also an excellent student and carried a 3.5 GPA.
Teammate Chris Briscoe heralded: “Steve was not only an outstanding athlete but he also represented every countenance of what Point Loma Nazarene College would like any student to portray.” Bruce went on to become the manger of Customer Relations for Yellow Front Systems and married wife, Valerie. The two settled in Sioux Falls, South Dakota with their son Jeffrey and daughters, Jana and Sarah.
The award for Outstanding Achievement by an Athlete was presented to Bruce by Jim Bond.
