Tom Hanley was part of Coach Foster’s first recruiting class in 1975. He was a four year letterman and a three year starter for the Crusader Basketball team. Tom was a big, strong, quick, athletic forward that developed into an all-star player. He was one of the team’s leading rebounders and scorers during his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons.
Tom’s career stats include 1,022 points, 561 rebounds with a 49.29% of field goals made. Tom, the quiet, easy going guy had an all-star senior season when he was team MVP, All-league, and an All-District 3 player. Tom played and coached professional basketball in Sweden after college.
Following his days of professional basketball, Tom joined the Navy. There he became a jet pilot retiring at the rank of Commander. He received recognition from former President George Bush expressing appreciation for his roles in helping defend the security of our nation in critical times.
After Tom retired from the Navy he went to work for American Airlines being commissioned Captain in 2000. Most of his assignments are out of Dallas where the Hanley family lives in nearby Flower Mound, Texas. Tom’s family includes wife, Julie Germaine who also attended Point Loma and sons, T.J. and Jon.
Tom you have been a credit to your college teams, your Alma Mater, your family and your nation making us very proud in our privilege of identity. It is with deep appreciation that we induct you into the Point Loma Nazarene University Athletic Hall of Fame as a basketball athlete. Congratulations.
