Sea Lions Tie With SDCC for Second Time

Loma remains winless in GSAC play

BOX SCORE

EL CAJON, Calif. – The Sea Lions and San Diego Christian tied 2-2 Tuesday afternoon. It was the second time this year that the two teams were even after 110 minutes. The first match was non-conference, Tuesday's counted in the Golden State Athletic Conference standings.

NAIA No. 18-ranked Point Loma Nazarene remains winless in conference play and stand at 0-2-2 GSAC, 2-3-4 overall. The host Hawks are 4-4-3, 0-2-2 GSAC.

PLNU dug itself out of a huge hole last year when the team dropped their first three conference contests but got hot down the stretch to qualify for the postseason. Once in the playoffs, the Sea Lions made a terrific run that took them to the NAIA title game. Any type of run begins with the first win, however, and Point Loma has to get going or it might be “wait till next year.”

Lauren Abarca netted her first goal of the year in the 15th minute of play Tuesday to give the Sea Lions a 1-0 lead. She took a pass from Lily Rainey deep inside the box and put the ball inside the far post.

But Loma could not slow down Hannah Waggoner. The Hawks forward scored her fourth and fifth goals of the year in the 34th and 55th minutes to give SDCC a 2-1 advantage. PLNU evened the score in minute 68 when Katie Pedlowe lobbed in a corner kick that Brooke Winklepleck headed into the Hawk net.

The Sea Lions attempted four more shots over the final 22 minutes of regulation and then another six shots in overtime, but none slipped past Hawk keeper Emily Garbez.

Point Loma, as they did in a scoreless tie with Concordia last week, dominated the action but could not finish enough chances to earn a win. The Green and Gold took 30 shots against the Hawks, nine on goal, to just 10 and seven from SDCC.

San Diego Christian keepers Garbez and Katelyn Ogle stopped seven PLNU shots on goal. Sea Lion keeper Tiffany Kracy had five saves in 110 minutes of action.

Point Loma plays host to Hope International for a GSAC tilt on Saturday starting at 1:00 pm.
