SAN DIEGOÂ -Â The Point Loma women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday (Sept. 14) by defeating crosstown rival San Diego Christian 2-0 at the PLNU Soccer Field.
Natalie Swift and
Jessica Van Loo scored one goal apiece as the Sea Lions improved to 1-3 while handing SDCC (4-1) its first loss of the year.
"I thought the girls played well," said PLNU head coach
Tim Hall. "We've been in every game we've lost, so I was encouraged by that but we needed to get this win. [The ladies] aren't too used to losing, so I think it was good for morale."
The Sea Lions unleashed an offensive barrage in the contest. They outshot the Hawks by an incredible margin of 27-6, with 13 of PLNU's shots going on-goal. San Diego Christian failed to record a shot on goal until late in the second half, which PLNU goalkeeper
Lupe Herrera easily scooped up.
Point Loma dominated the ball from the opening whistle and controlled the tempo through the contest, despite having just two goals to show for it.
In the 39th minute, freshman
Dottie Rhoten played a beautiful overhead through ball to Swift, who was streaking down the middle of the field. The sophomore, maintained control and scooted the ball past the goalie into the right side of the net while fending off a Hawks defender.
After halftime, the Sea Lions quickly struck again. Senior
Codi Cameron had control the ball down near the right corner. She played a skillful cross through traffic to find Van Loo waiting right in front of the goal to make the score 2-0.
"Their ideas of soccer today, the way they tried to play offensively, they way they were disciplined on defense — I was really happy with them," said Hall. "I was proud of them today."
This upcoming week the Sea Lions will hit the road as they open PacWest Conference play up in the Bay Area. The ladies will face Dominican University Thursday at 2:00 p.m., and Saturday they'll go up against Notre Dame de Namur at 11:00 a.m.
