2020 MEN'S TENNIS SEASON RECAP 5/12/2020 1:30:00 PM 2020 MEN'S TENNIS SEASON RECAP Final Record: 3-5PacWest Tournament: N/A – COVID-19PLNU stats: www.plnusealions.com/mtennisstatsSeason halted due to COVID-19: The abrupt end of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 meant the Sea Lion did not have the opportunity to play the second half of their schedule or participate in any postseason play. The women's team still had 10 regular season matches, the PacWest Championships and possibly the NCAA West Regional remaining in their season. PLNU earns big win Bay Area sweep: Before the season came to an abrupt end the Sea Lions traveled to the Bay Area to take on Sonoma State and Holy Names. PLNU would come out victorious in both matches as they defeated Sonoma State 4-2 and Holy Names 4-3. Regionally ranked: The Sea Lions opened up and maintained their regional ranking at the No. 7 spot in the west region. Despite coming out of the gates slow PLNU was playing well and looking to move on up in the rankings. Male Freshman Athlete of the Year: During the 2020 S.L.A.M. Awards Tyler Davis was nominated and late won Male Freshman Athlete of the Year. Tyler Davis made an immediate impact on the men's tennis team as he stepped into the No. 2 position in singles and teamed up with Yuki Okamoto at No. 1 doubles. Davis posted a 5-2 record in singles, including a win over the region's No. 13 ranked player in the last match of the year. Davis would match that record in doubles plays and even take down UC San Diego's top pair which was ranked No. 15 in the country. Senior sendoff: Although the tennis season ended abruptly and not how anyone expected the lone senior was sent off with a video tribute of his time at Point Loma. Mark Penner was a cornerstone for the PLNU men’s tennis team during his four years. Two seniors, Yuki Okamoto and Tim Soderman will each return for their extra year of eligibility for the 2020 season. Returning Sea Lions: The team will look very similar to this year as they return seven of their eight players. Alejandro Castaneda, Tyler Davis, Jan Plueer, David Strassburger, Jasdeep Paintal, Yuki Okamoto, and Tim Soderman will all return. Coach Wheeler: Curt Wheeler finished his sixth season as the head tennis coach and has compiled a 55-68 record on the men's side.
