Women's Soccer vs. Southern Nazarene

Sea Lions Triple Up on Southern Nazarene

Three was the theme of the day for PLNU soccer. On Thursday, the Sea Lions scored three different goals by three different players in beating Southern Nazarene (OK) 3-0 at Point Loma field. The Green and Gold is now 3-0 on the year.

Leading the way was sophomore transfer Lauren Abarca, who scored her third goal of the season in the 35th minute, the only one that PLNU would end up needing. That goal came after a throw in from senior Alex Fuller bounced off of a few players before Brooke Winklepleck found Abarca at point-blank range who sent the ball past SNU keeper Erica Brown.

Nearly the same scenario took place just four minutes later. A PLNU cross into the front of the Crimson Storm net got lost in a scrum. Abarca got possession and tapped the ball Kelsey Lundberg who tapped it to Fuller who found pay-dirt for a 2-0 Sea Lion lead.

"It feels great to be back," said Fuller who was without a point in 2008. "I was slowed by injury last year and it's nice to get off to a good start."

The score remained 2-0 despite a flurry of attempts from PLNU until Lily Rainey blew past the SNU defense on a breakaway and hammered in a shot from 30 yards out that just snuck in below the crossbar.

PLNU ended up taking 23 shots to just eight from SNU and had a 8-1 shots on goal advantage. The Sea Lion defense was stellar as usual. They did not allow the Storm to set up their shots and basically kept the ball on the other side of the field for most of the non-conference tilt.

Earning her third win in as many starts was PLNU freshman keeper Tiffany Kracy, though she was only called upon to make one save.

"Is was a great result," said PLNU coach Tim Hall. "The girls are creating chances and now they are finishing them. They play offense and defense with a purpose and it's paying off."

Southern Nazarene dropped to 0-1 on the year.

The Sea Lions will try to up their season mark to 4-0 on Friday when they host John Brown (AZ) at 4:00 pm.

"I am excited that we are off to a good start," said Fuller. "We have great chemistry and a great group of girls and it shows on the field."
