Loma Loses to the Lancers

Slow Start Dooms Point Loma

BOX SCORE

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Point Loma Nazarene was handed a 77-57 loss by NAIA fifth-ranked California Baptist Tuesday night. The Sea Lions fell to 9-9 overall, 4-6 GSAC while the first-place Lancers improved to 17-4, 10-1 GSAC.

PLNU is the only Golden State Athletic Conference team so far to defeat the Lancers – but that victory came in the very first conference game of the season back in November. CBU exacted a measure of revenge the second-time around.

CBU scored the first nine points of Tuesday's game and never looked back. The Sea Lions found themselves behind by as much as 29 points in the first half. Entering the break the score was 47-19, Lancers.

PLNU played much better in the second half – outscoring CBU 38-30 – though the game's outcome was in Lancer control by that time.

“Cal Baptist has a very good team,” said PLNU coach Bill Westphal. “They came out with a lot of energy and played really well. We got off to a very slow start. We can't afford to do that against a team of California's Baptist's caliber, especially on the road.”

The Sea Lions shot 34.4 percent to 47.5 percent by California Baptist. The Lancers had a large rebounding advantage, 49-27, over PLNU. Both teams made seven three pointers.

Abby Boorman paced PLNU with 13 points and five rebounds. Kiley Berlinski had 11 points in the loss with Renee Crawford adding 10.

Back-to-back GSAC Player of the Week Dana Olsen led the Lancers with 25 points and also pulled in nine rebounds.  Brenna Hahn scored 11 points with Renetha Burton grabbing 11 boards.

The Sea Lions host Westmont at 5:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
