SAN DIEGO – Point Loma Nazarene defeated visiting Notre Dame de Namur 69-59 Friday evening in Golden Gymnasium. The Sea Lions evened up their season mark to 1-1 with the win.
PLNU closed out both halves strong, a big reason for the team's non-conference triumph. After some early hot shooting from long-range by the NCAA DII Argonauts the game was tied at 16-all midway into the first.
But the Sea Lions reeled off a 7-0 run to take a lead they would not relinquish. A three-pointer from
Brianna Colon just before halftime sent Loma into the break up by 10.
NDNU stormed back in the second, however, and cut the gap to just one point at 39-38.
Crissa Jackson made a shot and
Nyla Bailey made three free throws to get PLNU back on track.
The Argonauts (0-1) wouldn't go away, though, and twice more managed to pull within a point of the Green and Gold.
The game hung in the balance until an
Abby Boorman layup at 1:31 extended PLNU's lead to five. Three Jackson free throws and NDNU turnovers over the last minute sealed the win for the Sea Lions.
Jackson led PLNU with 17 points and five assists. Colon contributed 16 points while
Nyla Bailey added 15 points and six rebounds to the win.
Kiley Berlinski chipped in with a pair of big three-pointers.
Argonaut Emily Vore paced all players with 19 points. NDNU is a member of the Pacific West Conference, the league PLNU will become a member of next year.
The Sea Lions will host Arizona Christian Saturday night. Tip-off is at 7:00 pm.
