SAN DIEGO – Point Loma Nazarene held Baker (Kan.) to a 28 shooting percentage and forced 21 turnovers to wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule with an 80-51 win over the Wildcats Thursday night in Golden Gymnasium.
Rhett Beal scored 24 points and pulled down eight rebounds for PLNU. The senior guard also contributed three assists and a steal in the win.
Loma improved to 7-4 with the victory and dropped the Baker to 9-4 on the year.
The Green and Gold led from start to finish, scoring the first four points of the game. PLNU's lead ballooned to 13 points after a 3-pointer from
Hayden Lescault at 8:28. Bakers sliced four points off the deficit and seemed to have gained some momentum but at the break it was Point Loma up 34-24.
PLNU came out of intermission and grabbed control of the game. The Sea Lion lead was at 15 less than two minutes into the stanza and reached 20 with a pair of free throws by
Todd Campbell at 13:13. Loma's advantage was a game-high 36 with 4:54 left.
The outcome in hand, Point Loma cruised over the remaining minutes, winning by 29.
PLNU shot 47 percent Thursday, was 9-for-18 from 3-point range and made 25-of-33 at the free throw line. The Sea Lions also outrebounded the Wildcats 38-30 and turned Baker's 21 turnovers into 28 points.
Campbell contributed 16 points and five rebounds for Point Loma with
Wil Bush adding 12 points.
Marek Klassen had eight points and
Jake Johnston had seven points.
The Wildcats were paced offensively by 10 points from Bandon Moore.
The Sea Lions return to conference play for good on Tuesday with a game against cross-town San Diego Christian. Tipoff in Golden Gym is slated for 7:30 pm.
