SAN DIEGO – Point Loma Nazarene improved to 5-0 on the season after a 4-0 non-conference triumph over visiting Hawaii-Hilo on Monday. The NCAA DII Vulcans fell to 1-1 with the loss.
The Sea Lions got on the board with a quick score. In just the second minute of play Katie Pedlowe lofted a corner kick to the front of the goal that was headed in by Krista Gregory, her second goal of the year.
Hilo missed on two golden opportunities following PLNU's score but both times the Vulcan's pass led the striker by too much.
The Sea Lions came up short on a couple of tries as well, including in the 41stminute when Kelly Christerson got past the Vulcan defense but her cross was grabbed at the last-second by Hilo keeper Breegan Saller.
The Vulcans set up some more chances a few minutes into the second half but DeDe Moriwaki's point-blank shot was turned back on a leaping save by Sea Lion keeper Tiffany Kracy and Analysa Rodriguez' attempt on an open goal was just wide.
Fortunately for Point Loma, the Sea Lions were able to hold onto their one-goal advantage.
PLNU added a big insurance goal in the 63rd minute. Similar to the first half, the score came on a Pedlowe corner kick. This time her shot was kneed in by Carleigh Salassi to give the Sea Lions a 2-0 lead.
Loma then tacked on two quick scores to put the game out of reach. Pedlowe put in Point Loma's third goal n the 88th minute on a breakaway pass from Madi White and Tina Shofeitt pulled away from the Hilo defense and put in another score in the final minute of play.
PLNU out shot Hilo 12-5, including a 7-2 shots on goal advantage. Kracy made two saves for the Sea Lions while Saller had four stops.
Loma hosts CSU San Marcos on Thursday for a 2:00 p.m. match.
