Point Loma Nazarene went on a 23-3 first half run to erase a ten-point deficit in beating visiting Concordia (CA) 69-57 Tuesday night in Golden Gymnasium. Though the final score left PLNU ahead by more than 10 points, it wasn't as clean as it looks on paper.
It took PLNU nearly six and a half minutes to get on the scoreboard to begin the game, and by the time they entered the scorebook, they were down 10-0.
Concordia would increase its lead to 11 points two minutes later, but then the Sea Lions awoke, blitzing the Eagles with a 23-2 run and racing to a 36-22 halftime lead.
The beginning of the second half looked a lot like the start of the contest as the hosts didn't score for the first five and a half minutes, allowing Concordia to cut the lead to four points. But they would get no closer than that and the Sea Lions would lead by as many as 15 points before settling for the final 12-point margin.
The scoring of
Crissa Jackson and
Nyla Bailey helped to drown out the roller coaster nature of the game. The duo tallied 23 points apiece; Bailey garnered 15 boards and Jackson seven.
Kiley Berlinski added nine rebounds, five of which were on the offensive end.
The Sea Lions outrebounded the Eagles 59-41. Point Loma also went to the free throw line 15 more times than Concordia and made the most of those appearances, hitting nearly 70 percent of all free throws.
Concordia's Amanda Fielder recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds while Melody Chavez put up 19 points to lead her squad.
Concordia is now 6-10 overall, 3-6 in the GSAC.
Point Loma is 13-8 overall, 4-5 in GSAC. The Sea Lions will travel to Westmont on Saturday, Jan 28 for a game at 5:30 pm.
