box score

SAN DIEGO -- The Sea Lions picked up their first conference win of the year on Tuesday when they beat San Diego Christian in Golden Gymnasium, 55-54.

Point Loma Nazarene forward Todd Campbell hit what would be the game-winning jumper at the 2:35 mark. The Hawks meanwhile failed to score on their final six possessions, with Sea Lion sophomore forward Anthony Ussery blocking SDCC's final attempt with four seconds to go.

Senior Wil Bush paced the Sea Lions with 14 points, shooting a sizzling 4-5 from behind the arch, and sophomore Hayden Lescault added 11 points and 6 assists.

SDCC's Kevin Dawson led all scorers with 20 points on 8-13 shooting to go along with 5 rebounds.

Against the Hawks, the Sea Lions prevailed in the two areas that have struggled with the most all season long, shooting 60 percent (6-10) from 3-point range and limiting themselves to just 14 turnovers. SDCC, on the other hand, was just 5-17 from downtown and gave up 20 turnovers.

The Sea Lions led for virtually the entire first half, keyed by eight points from Campbell and a pair of treys from Bush. A layup from Lescault with four minutes left in the half put the Green and Gold up 31-22, their largest lead of the night.

But the visiting Hawks fought back down the stretch, and the Sea Lions entered halftime up only 34-29.

SDCC started the second half strong, scoring five straight points to tie the game at 34 on a 3-pointer by Johnny Delbene, who finished the game with 17 points.

From then on, the teams battled back and forth, and the second half featured three ties and four lead changes.

With just over five minutes to go and the Hawks leading 48-44, Bush nailed a 3-pointer to pull the Sea Lions to within a point.

After a 3-point play by Benji Arvizu, Lescault and Bush each sank treys to put the Sea Lions back in front.

But with 3 minutes left Dawson responded with a 3-point play of his own to retake the lead for the Hawks.

With 2:35 to go, Campbell hit a jumper off a pass from senior Rhett Beal to give the Sea Lions the lead for good in the final score of the night.

On their next possession, the Hawks missed three straight 3-pointers and failed to score for the rest of the game, and the Sea Lions locked up their first GSAC win of the season.

With the win over SDCC, the Sea Lions improved to 8-4 overall, 1-2 GSAC. The Hawks, meanwhile, dropped to 4-6 overall, 0-3 GSAC.

On Saturday, the Sea Lions will travel to Fresno to take on NAIA No. 24-ranked Fresno Pacific. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 pm.
