Point Loma drops four-set match to CBU

[Box score]

SAN DIEGO
- Nicole Eiler recorded her fourth straight match with double-figure digs for the Point Loma volleyball team but it was California Baptist that came away with an 25-18, 22-25, 25-20 and 25-20 win on Tuesday night (Oct. 23)in Golden Gymnasium.

Eiler had 20 digs in the match to bring her season total to over five digs a set (5.1). The senior from Scottsdale, Ariz., also added a season-best four service aces and four assists.  Eiler was matched in digs by teammate Briana Vieth. Vieth added 15 kills to go along with her 20 digs, for her sixth double-double of the season. Kelli LeClair also added 13 kills and Natalie Hamill had 38 assists.

California Baptist came at PLNU with a very balanced attack. Three Lancers had double-figure kills, led by Malika O'Brien's 13. They also had four student-athletes reach double-figure digs.

After CBU won the opening set, the Sea Lions responded with their strongest set of the match in the second game. The Sea Lions were down 10-6 and 16-13 and fought back to knot the match at 18-18. Point Loma would then win the next three points and never look back on its way to a 25-22 win. In the third set, PLNU and CBU were tied at 17-17 but the Lancers went on a 5-0 run and carried that momentum on to win the last two sets and the match.

"Until we can make changes we will continue to find ourselves in frustrating matches," explained PLNU head coach Sarah Gustin. "Our defense did a good job picking it up in the second set but offensively we did not follow through in the next sets."

The Point Loma volleyball team will continue its six-match homestand on Thursday, Oct. 25 against No. 21 Grand Canyon at 7:00 p.m. The Sea Lions upset Grand Canyon when the 'Lopes were ranked No. 16 last week in Phoenix.
