SAN DIEGO -
Kelly Christerson scored two goals, and
Kaycie Hanlin notched a goal and an assist, to lead the Point Loma women's soccer team to a 4-0 win over Pacific West Conference rival Hawaii Hilo on Monday (Oct. 8).
This is the eighth win for Point Loma in its last 10 matches. The Sea Lions once again are at the top of the PacWest standings with a 6-1-1 record. They currently lead Dixie State by one point. The Red Storm will face BYU-Hawaii tonight at 7:00 p.m. The loss drops Hawaii Hilo to 4-7-0 on the season and to 1-7-0 in conference play.
Hanlin started the offensive onslaught for the Sea Lions by scoring on a penalty kick in the 18th minute. The junior from Denver then found Christerson open at the top of the box for a one-timer in the 38th minute to put PLNU up 2-0 at the half.
Christerson would put the match out of reach just three minutes into the second half. Point Loma once again pushed the ball into Vulcans' territory, and this time it was
Kallie Caldwell finding Christerson open in the box for another score. The goals were Christerson's first two of the season.
Tara Kracy and
Michaela Maes would then create a memory that will stick with both the rest of their careers. Maes took the corner kick and placed it well in front of the net and Kracy went up over the defense and headed it into the net to put PLNU in front 4-0. This was the first points in the careers of both freshmen, who both came into the match off the bench.
"It was a very good second half for our team," said Point Loma head coach
Tim Hall. "I felt we came out of the half with good energy levels. I thought we created some good things offensively, and defensively we are always scrappy. I was happy with the whole team effort and that everyone contributed.
"2-0 can be a dangerous score in soccer," Hall continued. "It is dangerous because if you go to sleep and someone sneaks one in you have to battle. I was really happy with the way it worked itself out because after halftime we went back and played good soccer."
Lupe Herrara led the Sea Lions with two saves. This is the third combined shutout of the season for Herrara and starting goalie
Tiffany Kracy. PLNU has now shutout opponents in eight of 11 matches this season.
The Point Loma women's soccer team will be off the rest of the week before hosting Chaminade on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 1:30 p.m.
