Sea Lions start road trip with sweep of Hilo

HILO, Hawaii
- The Point Loma volleyball team swept Hawaii Hilo 25-23, 25-20 and 25-22 on Monday (Oct. 8) to begin its four-match, six-day trip to Hawaii.

The Sea Lions earned the win by controlling the action at the net. They outhit UHH .252 to .136 and outblocked them 7.5 to 2.0. Delaney McCraney led the way with a .444 hitting percentage and 10 kills. McKensey Wise added a .467 hitting percentage with eight kills and just one error in 15 attempts to go along with four blocks.

"I was really pleased with our defensive effort," said Point Loma head coach Sarah Gustin. "We did a great job of following our game plan."

Kelli LeClair and Briana Vieth each added double-figure kills. Vieth had a team-best 13 finishers and LeClair had 10 kills to go along with 11 digs for the double-double. Natalie Hamill had 37 assists and Nicole Eiler 22 digs to lead the team.

The sweep was the Sea Lions' third of the season and it snapped a three-match losing streak for Point Loma (6-9, 2-4 PacWest). The loss puts Hawaii Hilo at 4-11 on the season and at 4-5 in the PacWest.

The Sea Lions never trailed in the first or second set after reaching double-figures on the scoreboard. In the third set PLNU was forced to battle back to earn the sweep. Point Loma fell behind 15-13 and 17-15 before going on a 5-1 run to take a 20-18 lead. The match would then get knotted at 21-21 before the Sea Lions finished out the match on a 4-1 spurt.

Point Loma will continue its road trip in Honolulu on Wednesday night with a showdown against Chaminade starting at 10:00 p.m. (PST).
