FRESNO, Calif. - When the Point Loma women's soccer team boards the bus tomorrow morning to drive from Fresno to the Bay Area every member of the team will be doing it with a smile on their face thanks to
Nicole Craft.
Craft headed in a free kick from
Jessica Van Loo in the 107th minute of the match to send Point Loma to a 1-0 road win at Fresno Pacific on Thursday, Nov. 1.
The Sea Lions made the Sunbirds pay for their yellow card earlier in the minute by converting on the set play.
Leah Porter took the free kick and played the ball into the box. A defender got the initial touch on the ball but Van Loo headed the ball back towards the goal and Craft redirected the shot past the goal keeper into the net to send Point Loma to its first overtime win of the season.
The win moves Point Loma (12-4-1, 9-3-1 PacWest) into third place in the Pacific West Conference with 28 points. The Sea Lions are two points up on BYU-Hawaii and Grand Canyon which are tied for fourth place, and five points back of second place Azusa Pacific.
For the first 106 minutes the match was locked in a defensive struggle. PLNU edged FPU in shots 11-8, including 3-2 with shots on goal.
Tiffany Kracy anchored the backline for the Sea Lions by making two saves. Sarah King matched her with two saves as well.
It was a balanced scoring attack for PLNU with nine student-athletes taking at least one shot, led by three from
Tara Kracy. Jae Vega took five of the eight shots for the Sunbirds in the contest.
The Point Loma women's soccer team will now travel to Dominican to face the Penguins in San Rafael on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 1:30 p.m.
