SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma women's basketball team fed off the energy of the Homecoming crowd and rode a strong defensive team effort to earn a 59-46 win in its season opener over Biola on Saturday, Nov. 17.

The Sea Lions played suffocating defense throughout the evening in the non-conference game, holding the Eagles to 26 percent shooting from the field, including just 21 percent in the first half. Point Loma's defense also limited Biola's Adijat Adams to just seven points on 2-of-10 shooting. She came into the game averaging 15.6 points per game. The Sea Lions added seven blocked shots led by five swats from Abby Boorman.

Meanwhile Nyla Bailey was a force inside for PLNU. The 2011-12 NAIA All-American scored 23 points and shot 50 percent from the field.

Point Loma also got strong support from the surrounding cast to earn the win. Carlotta Kloppenburg scored 13 points, including knocking down three treys and tied for the team lead with seven rebounds in her Sea Lion debut. Fellow transfer Jessica Escorza tied with Kloppenburg for the team lead in rebounds with seven.

PLNU grabbed the lead with 14:27 remaining in the first half and would never surrender it. With the score tied at 9-9, the Sea Lions went on a 13-2 run to go on top by 11 (22-11). They would take an eight-point lead into the half (26-18).

In the second half, PLNU continued to build on its lead and would push it to as many as 18 on a jumper by Erin Andersen with 5:26 remaining. Point Loma then hung on for the 13-point margin of victory.

The win moves Point Loma to 1-0 on the season. The game was played as an exhibition for Biola who remained at 2-3 on the season.

The Point Loma women's basketball will now prepare to play in the Cal State Los Angeles Thanksgiving Tournament. They will open with Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, Nov. 23 at 1:00 p.m. PLNU will then close out the tournament by taking on Cal State Los Angeles on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
