SAN DIEGO -- The Sea Lions picked up their first win of the year Saturday when they defeated Southern Nazarene in Golden Gymnasium 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-20). Point Loma ups its overall record to 1-2 on the season.
The Green and Gold will match up with Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7:00 p.m. later this evening in the final contest of the 2012 Seaside Invitational.
PLNU outhit Southern Nazarene .211 to .108 in what proved to be an otherwise very close match. Though it was a clean sweep, all three sets were close as Point Loma head coach Sarah Gustin tinkered with her line-up after opening the year with two losses on Friday.
Just eight Sea Lion players were utilized for the entire match. Rookie Savannah Weidemeyer made her starting debut at setter, while freshman McKensey Wise was 6-for-12 at the net, and freshman
Briana Vieth hit .571, contributing eight kills.
Surprisingly, PLNU committed 12 costly service errors compared to The Crimson Storm's six. But a couple extra Sea Lion blocks, more digs, assists, and overall better hitting made up for it.
Sophomore
Delaney McCraney added 12 kills to the day while
Nicole Eiler played tough defense with 23 digs.
The Sea Lions are now 1-2 overall and will take on Cal Poly Pomona on Tuesday, Sept 6 at 7 pm after they finish up tonight.
