Sea Lions lose 5-set heartbreaker

Cal Poly rallies to top PLNU

POMONA, Calif--PLNU's Kelli LeClair had a career-high 32 kills, including eight in the dramatic fifth set, but host Cal Poly Pomona rallied to defeat the Sea Lions 23-25, 25-20, 18-25, 25-17, 16-14 in the opening match of the Pacific Coast Classic.

LeClair, a freshman, hit at a sizzling .364 clip and added four service aces but the Broncos came back from a 2-1 set deficit to claim the win. in the fifth set, neither team led by more than two points before CPP scored the last two points of the match.

That trend mostly mirrored the rest of the match, which was close from start to finish. With the victory, Cal Poly Pomona improved to 3-2 on the season. Point Loma, who lost its second consecutive five-set match, dropped to 1-4.

As a team, Cal Poly hit a red-hot .342 percentage, led by Diana Lake's 24 kills (.449). Kelly Bonja added 27 digs to lead the defense.

The Sea Lions will have two chances to bounce back on Friday, taking on Cal State San Marcos at 11 am and Cal State Dominguez Hills at 5 pm. The match with the Toros is a rematch from last Saturday, one that CSUDH won in five sets.
