LOS ANGELES--Point Loma picked up its second win of the day and gained a measure of revenge at the same time when they defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday night at the Pacific Coast Classic.
The Sea Lions, who fell to the Toros last Saturday in five sets at their own Seaside Invitational, went five sets again with CSUDH but this time gained the win. Point Loma took the first two sets and then held off a furious Toro rally to reign 25-23, 25-18, 18-25, 20-25, 15-11. That victory came half a day after a 3-1 win over Cal State San Marcos, moving PLNU's mark to 3-4 on the season. Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped to 2-4 in 2012.
Kelli LeClair led PLNU in kills for the third straight contest with 16.
Delaney McCraney added 15 putaways, while
Nicole Eiler paced the defense with 33 digs. Brianna Vieth added 20 digs. Freshman setter
Savannah Wedemeyer had a complete game with 4 service aces, 13 digs, 29 assists and 5 kills.
After watching the feisty Toros battle back to tie the match at two sets apiece, PLNU held a scant 12-11 lead late in the fifth set. Point Loma then took matter into its own hands with consecutive kills by LeClair, Vieth and
Marissa Ellow to claim the final game and the match, 15-11.
Coach Sarah Gustin's team will be back on the court Saturday to take on co-host Cal State LA.
