SAN DIEGO –
Jessica Escorza and
Callie Rhoads scored 14 points apiece to pace the Point Loma women's basketball team, but a pair of well-timed runs for California Baptist propelled the Lancers to a 69-43 win on Saturday, Jan. 12.
The win helps Cal Baptist keep pace in the Pacific West Conference standings with a 3-1 record (9-3 overall). The Lancers are one of five teams in the conference with just one loss. All five teams are trailing Academy of Art, who is a perfect 5-0 in the PacWest. The loss was the third straight for PLNU which fell to 4-8 on the season and to 2-4 in the PacWest.
The Lancers came out and scored 14 of the first 16 points of the game to take a lead they would never relinquish. The Sea Lions would fight back with an 11-2 run to cut the lead back to three midway through the first half but would this as close as they would get as CBU took a 33-21 lead into halftime. The Lancers then opened the second period on a 16-2 run to end any hope of a Sea Lions' comeback.
Jasmine Beverly led CBU with 15 points and nine rebounds. Lesley Vodicska and Myriah Hicks also added 12 points each. Cal Baptist won the turnover battle 23-12 and the rebounding battle 43-32.
The 14 points for Escorza was a career-high. She went 6-of-8 from the field, including scoring six straight points for the Sea Lions during the second half.
The Point Loma women's basketball team will now step out of conference when it hosts Cal State San Marcos on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 7:00 p.m.
