SAN DIEGO - No one will ever be able to say the Point Loma men's basketball team didn't compete till the end in every game during the 2012-13 season, but once again it was the opponent coming away with the victory in a tight game as Academy of Art earned a 77-69 win over PLNU on Thursday, Jan. 31.

The game once again came down to the final minutes as it was tied at 63 with five minutes remaining but the Urban Knights (6-10, 4-6 PacWest) outscored the Sea Lions (3-14, 0-9 PacWest) by eighth down the stretch to pull off the victory.

Alex Carmon came off the bench to lead AAU with 19 points. Ammer Shamsud-din added 17 points and a team-high five assists, while Rodrigo Maza notched a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Taylor Wetherell hit five 3-pointers to lead PLNU with 19 points. Sam Okhotin came off the bench for the Sea Lions to record 10 points.

The Urban Knights' biggest edge came on points off turnovers where they converted 18 PLNU turnovers into 29 points and outscored the Sea Lions by 18 points. Point Loma managed to stay in the game by knocking down a season-high 12 treys, including eight in the opening period.

PLNU led by as many as 10 points in an opening period that featured four ties and six lead changes. The Sea Lions grabbed the double-digit lead after putting together an 11-4 run. AAU would battle back and thanks to a 10-0 spurt, would take a 34-33 lead into the half. The Urban Knights would then score the first basket of the second half, before PLNU scored the next eight to take a six-point lead (45-39). The teams would then exchange baskets and leads over the next 12 minutes and found themselves locked at 63-63 with five minutes left. 

The Sea Lions will now prepare to host Dominican on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 4:00 p.m.
