Freshman
Courtnie Marshall's first career goal lifted PLNU to a 2-1 overtime victory over PacWest rival BYU-Hawaii.
Marshall knocked in a volley off a long throw from Sydney in the 94th minute, and the Sea Lions (4-3-1, 3-0-1) remained undefeated in PacWest play. The Seasiders (1-4-1, 0-3-0) are still looking for their first PacWest win.
The Sea Lions outshot BYUH 11-6, but neither team could manage many real chances as the game was played mostly in the middle third of the field. PLNU finished with just three shots on goal compared to two for the Seasiders.
Marshall led the team with three shots, and senior
Leah Porter took two of her own.
Senior
Codi Cameron shot just once all game, but she made it count in the 24th minute.
Amanda Mitchell dribbled the ball toward the right side of the goal but was cut off by a BYUH defender. The sophomore turned back and found Cameron wide open at the top right corner of the box, and Cameron fired a beautiful arcing strike across to the upper left corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
In the 39th minute, the Seasiders answered. Kim Micheletti and McKenzie Evans found themselves matched against the Sea Lions defense 2-on-2 on the counterattack. Micheletti drew both PLNU defenders and tapped the ball back to Evans, who took a pair of dribbles and beat goalkeeper
Lupe Herrera to even the score at 1-1.
The teams would play to a draw for the rest of regulation. BYUH had one last chance late in the second half. Herrera went out near the top of the box to challenge a play but the ball got behind her.
But
Claire Mathews has in perfect position to clear the ball out of bounds, and the teams prepared for overtime.
Just three and a half minutes in the extra period, Dreves, the Sea Lions' long throw-in specialist, came downfield to make a throw from right by the right corner flag. The ball flew over the crowd, and Marshall struck it in on the far post for the game-winner.
The Sea Lions have two games remaining in a four-game homestand against the four PacWest Hawaii schools. The ladies will host Chaminade Thursday Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. and then Hawaii Pacific Saturday Oct. 5 at 11 a.m.
