Mathews, Van Loo score as PLNU shuts out HNU

Box Score

OAKLAND - Claire Mathews and Jessica Van Loo each netted a goal en route to leading the Point Loma women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory at Holy Names on Monday (Oct. 14) which lifted the team into a tie for first place in the Pacific West Conference.

The win gave the Sea Lions (7-4-1, 6-1-1 PacWest) their 19th point in conference play to place them in a deadlock with Dixie State. It was also the sixth win in the past seven matches for PLNU. They are now 3-0-1 in conference road matches. Holy Names drops to 3-8 on the season and 0-6 in conference with the loss.

Mathews got Point Loma on the board first with a goal in the 19th minute. She took a shot right in front of the net but HNU's goalie was able to deflect the ball away. However, the ball once again found the foot of Mathews who booted it into the net for her second score of the season.

The game would remain at 1-0 until the 80th minute when Jessica Van Loo fired in an unassisted goal from inside the box to put the Sea Lions up by two goals with 10 minutes on the clock.

Lupe Herrera and the Sea Lions' defense would do the rest to keep the Hawks scoreless and help Point Loma earn its fifth shutout of the season. She made one save in the contest.

PLNU dominated HNU in shots (19-5) and corner kicks (5-2) but only found the net twice. Jenni Dooley made eight saves for HNU.

Point Loma's next opponent will be California Baptist which currently sits in third place in the PacWest with 18 points. The two teams will meet Saturday, Oct. 19 at 11:00 a.m., in the PLNU Soccer Field.
