PLNU hosts 'Dig Pink Night' this Thursday

THIS WEEK:
The Sea Lions will open the week by hosting San Diego Christian on Thursday as part of their annual 'Dig Pink Night' to support breast cancer awareness. The match between PLNU and SDC will start at 7:00 p.m., and will also be 'Faculty Appreciation Night.' PLNU will then head on the road to take on Azusa Pacific on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 3:00 p.m.

DIG PINK NIGHT TOMORROW:
Thursday, Oct. 24 will be 'Dig Pink Night' when the Sea Lions host San Diego Christian at 7:00 p.m. Come out to the match in your pink gear to raise the level of breast cancer awareness and to support your Sea Lions. The 'Dig Pink' event is hosted each year in October and November by the American Volleyball Coaches Association to raise awareness and support for breast cancer. PLNU will be holding a bake sale fundraiser in the gym tomorrow during the match with all proceeds going to the national Dig Pink Foundation for cancer research.

A LOOK AT THE SEA LIONS:
Point Loma won two out of three matches on its road trip to Hawaii, with its only loss coming against No. 5 BYU-Hawaii. The Sea Lions still have a hold on first place in the Pacific West Conference with a 12-1 record (18-4 overall). They have a one-match lead on BYUH in the standings as both teams have one loss but the Sea Lions have two more victories in the win column. PLNU had won 11 straight matches to open PacWest play before falling at BYUH.

Alyssa Dwyer continues to lead the PacWest with a .365 hitting percentage. She is also one of only three listed in the top 10 that has 200 or more kills. She is ranked 10th in the league with 3.18 kills per set. Heather Leavitt has moved into second place in the PacWest with 4.00 kills per set. Kelli LeClair is also ranked eighth (3.22 kills) to give the Sea Lions three spots in the top 10 in the PacWest. No other team has more than one ranked in the top 10. Savannah Wedemeyer is also ranked second in the PacWest. She is averaging 11.24 assists per set and paces the league with 843 total assists. Delaney McCraney comes in third in aces with 0.45 per set.

PLNU FALLS OUT OF TOP 25:
Despite their only loss of last week coming to No. 5 BYU-Hawaii the PLNU volleyball team has fallen back one spot, and out of the top 25, to the 'others receiving votes' category. PLNU received 60 votes in the latest poll to rank as the top team in the 'receiving votes' category. They are 21 points back of Northern State who is currently 25 in the polls.

A LOOK AT THE HAWKS:
San Diego Christian enters Thursday's non-conference match at 4-15 on the season and 2-5 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. They have lost six of their last seven matches, including the last four in a row.  Ashley Simpson leads the team with 2.58 kills per set. SDC also splits time at the setter position between Morgan Sorce and Cassidy Mertens. Merten paces the squad with 4.82 assists, and Sorce is second with 3.17 assists.

A LOOK AT THE COUGARS:
Azusa Pacific is tied for fifth in the PacWest with Hawaii Pacific at 7-4 (14-6 overall). They won their last two matches in Hawaii against HPU and Chaminade after being upset by Hawaii Hilo in five sets. APU is third in the conference in hitting percentage (.241) and kills (14.11), while leading the league in assists (13.34). Christy Cain and Lauren Edwards rank second and third, respectively, in the PacWest in hitting percentage. The Cougars have also split time at setter. Tristan Racich leads the team with 6.94 assists and Jaden Louie is right behind her with 6.52 assists. Mattie Shelford paces the squad in kills with 3.21 per set.

GREEN & GOLD FRIDAYS:
Point Loma fans can support the Sea Lions and show pride in PLNU each Friday by wearing your Green & Gold. Wear your schools proudly around campus and to the athletic events each Friday to show your school spirit. This is the first year of the campus-wide initiative created by members of the PLNU Green Sea.

TICKET PRICES:
All Point Loma home events are free to PLNU students, staff and faculty (with ID card), and to all children 12 years old and younger. For others looking to attend the games tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for all non-PLNU student and seniors. All tickets are general admission seating and are available for purchase at the venue 90 minutes before game time.

NEXT WEEK:
The Sea Lions will be in for another tough stretch of matches next week when it hosts California Baptist on Tuesday, Oct. 29 and then goes to Fresno Pacific on Saturday, Nov. 2.
