Dixie State scores in double OT to stun Sea Lions

Box Score

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Dixie State's Jennifer Mason was a thorn in the Sea Lions' side on Saturday (Oct. 26) as she scored the equalizing goal in the 59th minute and the game-winner in the second overtime period to lift the Red Storm over the Point Loma women's soccer team 3-2.

PLNU (7-6-1, 6-3-1 PacWest) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Courtnie Marshall in the seventh minute and by Jessica Van Loo in the 25th.

The Sea Lions took that 2-0 lead into the locker room at the break but the second half would belong to the Red Storm (7-5-2, 7-3-1 PacWest). Megan Marchbanks cut PLNU's lead in half on a goal three minutes into the second frame and Mason then tied it up in the 59th minute on an assist off a free kick from Aarika Andersen.

It would take over 37 more minutes but Mason would again break the Sea Lions' hearts when she beat the Point Loma defense and got a 1v1 and was able to beat goalkeeper Lupe Herrera for the game-winning goal.

Herrera had seven saves in the contest, her second-highest total of the year. She was constantly tested in the second half and overtime periods as the Red Storm took 15 of their 16 shots and all 10 of their shots on goal. Meanwhile Point Loma was only able to get seven shots after halftime compared to six beforehand. Stacie Gubler made six saves for Dixie State.

PLNU got assists from Lexi Hogan on the first goal and Claire Mathews on the second. It was Mathews fourth assist of the season.

The Point Loma women's soccer team will now return home to face Cal State San Marcos in a non-conference contest on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 1:00 p.m.
