AZUSA, Calif. - Joy Reinke had 14 kills to help Azusa Pacific upset the Point Loma volleyball team, 25-19, 25-14, 25-19, on Saturday (Oct. 26) and knock the Sea Lions out of first place in the Pacific West Conference.
PLNU (19-5) now sits in a tie for second place in the conference with Cal Baptist at 12-2, one match behind BYU-Hawaii. Point Loma will face CBU at home on Tuesday, Oct. 29th at 7:00 p.m., as both teams chase the first-place Seasiders. Azusa Pacific is now 15-7 on the season and in fifth place in the PacWest at 8-5.
No Sea Lion student-athlete had double-figure kills in the contest as the team never found its footing offensively. PLNU lost the hitting percentage battle in each set and ended the match with as many kills as hitting errors (24-24).
Kelli LeClair led the team with nine kills.
With its offense struggling Point Loma stayed in the contest the best it could thanks to its defense. It outblocked APU 13.0 to 9.0 and limited it to a .179 hitting percentage.
Alyssa Dwyer had nine blocks in the losing effort, while
Christin Fisher added 13 digs.
Reinke had a double-double for the Cougars with those 14 kills while adding a match-high 19 digs. Alicia Utke (18) and Ashley Swatek (14) also added double-figure digs for APU.
Point Loma will look to bounce back from this match on Tuesday when Cal Baptist comes in for a 7:00 p.m. showdown with second place on the line.
