SAN DIEGOÂ -Â Point Loma dropped its first PacWest Conference match of the season Saturday, falling 1-0 to Hawaii Pacific on a goal in the 82nd minute.
Â
Despite outshooting the Sea Warriors 16-11 and controlling possession for most the game, PLNU simply could not find the net. All it took was once play for HPU to steal the game away.
Â
"It's a really really rough game to lose," said PLNU Head Coach
Tim Hall. "I don't feel like my girls played that badly. The thing that frustrates me about today is that I don't think we came mentally ready to play."
Â
With the loss, the Sea Lions fell to 5-4-1, 4-1-1 PacWest, and the Sea Warriors (3-6, 1-3 PacWest) won their first conference match this year.
Â
Junior
Claire Mathews led the Sea Lions with four shots. Freshman
Dottie Rhoten was next with three shots, all of which were on goal.
Â
The game was played for a stalemate for 81 minutes, before HPU finally scored. The Sea Lions were pushing the ball forward when the ball fell to Hawaii Pacific. The Sea Warriors launched a swift counterattack, and Andrea Aguirre fired a perfectly placed ball from well outside the box over a leaping
Lupe Herrera and into the top of the net.
Â
The Sea Lions would have a couple more chances to score, but they were unable to connect.
Â
"I didn't feel like we came prepared to play at the level that we should've," said Hall. "I felt like we played well for most of the game, but when you allow another teams emotions back in it then you've got a dogfight. I was disappointed in the way we showed up mentally today, and I'll take full responsibility for that."
Â
Next up for PLNU is a trip to the Bay Area to face two PacWest rivals. The Sea Lions will face Academy of Art Saturday Oct. 12 at noon. Then Monday Oct. 14 the ladies will square off against Holy Names at 1:00 p.m.
