Sea Lions capture second place in PacWest

Box Score

ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Point Loma volleyball captured second place in the final Pacific West Conference standings with a 25-19, 25-21, 24-26 and 25-20 win on the road at Dixie State on Saturday, Nov. 16.

Point Loma (23-7, 16-4 PacWest) and Dixie State (17-9, 14-6 PacWest) entered the match both with their eyes on second place. PLNU was one match up on both DSC and California Baptist (17-11, 14-6 PacWest) but needed the win to finish in sole possession of second place. The loss dropped Dixie State back into a tie for third place in the conference with CBU.

Heather Leavitt led the Sea Lions with her 20th double-double of the season and sixth in a row. She hammered down 21 kills and 17 digs to go along with a team-leading three service aces. Kelli LeClair added a double-double of her own with 11 kills (and only error) and 15 digs. Alyssa Dwyer chipped 16 kills, six blocks and a .306 hitting percentage.

Savannah Wedemeyer matched her season-high with six kills while leading the team with a .385 hitting percentage and 48 assists. Delaney McCraney paced the Sea Lions with 24 digs.

Shannon Young paced the Red Storm with 19 kills.

The second place finish for Point Loma is its best since joining the Pacific West Conference prior to the 2012-13 season. The previous best finish for PLNU in the PacWest was third place at the conference track & field championships and in the 2012 women's soccer standings.

The 16 wins in conference also signaled a 10-match turnaround from 2012's conference record of 6-10 (10-17 overall). The Sea Lions' rise to capture second place in the PacWest also came at the surprise of many of the conference coaches who picked PLNU to finish sixth in the standings. Point Loma did all this despite playing one of the toughest schedules in the unbalanced PacWest as it played each of the other top 5 teams in the standings twice. Only PLNU and Cal Baptist can boast on playing each top 5 teams in the PacWest twice this season.

Point Loma will now host Azusa Pacific (21-9, 13-7 PacWest) in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) West Regional finals on Friday, Nov. 22 at 5:00 p.m.
