FRESNO, Calif. - Kelly Nikkel made her senior day a memorable one by scoring both goals to lead Fresno Pacific to a 2-1 win over the Point Loma women's soccer team on Saturday, Nov. 2.
Nikkel scored her first goal of the match, and just second of the season, in the 30th minute to give FPU (7-7-1, 5-4-1 Pacific West Conference) the lead.
Rhoten provided the equalizer for Point Loma (8-7-1, 6-4-1 PacWest) in the 35th minute off an assist from
Tara Kracy. This was Rhoten's team-leading fifth goal of the season and Kracy's first assist. The gaol sent the match into the half tied at 1-1.
The match remained tied until the 65th minute when Nikkel scored her second goal of the match as she maneuvered around the defender and hit the shot from the left side of the box.
The Sea Lions would get plenty of opportunities to tie up the match as they outshot FPU 25-14 in the match, and 15-5 in the second half. Sarah King 12 saves in the win for the Sunbirds.
Ariel Oriarte made three saves in her first career start for Point Loma.
"We just got outworked by a Fresno Pacific team that played with more energy today," said Point Loma head coach Tm Hall said. "We did some things well but we have to come with more energy to be successful in this conference. You can't just have ideas out there you have to have the energy too."
The Point Loma women's soccer team will now return home to host Azusa Pacific next Saturday (Nov. 9) at 11:00 a.m. The match will be the final regular season contest for PLNU and will also be Senior Day for a number of Sea Lions.
PLNU has already locked up a spot in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) West Regional which will be held Nov. 15-16.
