PLNU hosts APU in NCCAA Regional on Friday, 5 pm

The season and the opportunity to advance to the postseason will be on the line Friday night when the Point Loma volleyball team hosts Azusa Pacific in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) West Regional, starting at 5:00 p.m.

BRING YOUR CANNED FOOD AND GET IN FREE:
As part of the NCCAA West Regional, Point Loma has teamed up with the NCCAA to hold a canned food drive on Friday (Nov. 22) for a community service project. All fans that bring a canned food and donate it at the gate will receive free admission to the contest.

A LOOK AT THE SEA LIONS:
In just its second season in the Pacific West Conference, the Point Loma women's volleyball team finished second in the standings with a 16-4 record (23-7 overall). It closed out the season winning four of its final five matches, including getting two critical victories last week over Hawaii Pacific and on the road at Dixie State to earn second place outright. Point Loma went 13-2 at home this season, including winning its first 11 matches.

The Sea Lions are a well-rounded team offensively with three of its hitters ranked in the top 10 of the PacWest in kills. No other team has more than one. Heather Leavitt leads the Sea Lions and ranks third in the PacWest with 3.99 kills per set. She also finished the regular season ranked fifth in the conference with 0.35 service aces and 14th in digs (3.61). Kelli LeClair is fifth in the PacWest with 3.29 kills and 18th with 3.18 digs. Alyssa Dwyer ranks fourth in the conference with a .335 hitting percentage and seventh with 3.29 kills. Setter Savannah Wedemeyer has spread the ball around all season to these hitters and finished the year ranked second with 11.3 assists.

As a team Point Loma is third in hitting percentage (.227) and assists (13.25). It is second in the league with 1.8 service aces and third in opponent hitting percentage (.167).

A LOOK AT THE COUGARS:
Azusa Pacific finished fifth in the PacWest this season with a 13-7 record (21-9 overall). APU was on a four-match winning streak before dropping its season finale at Dominican (CA) in four sets. Mattie Shelford leads the Cougars and ranks ninth in the PacWest with 3.24 kills per set. Middle blockers Christy Cain and Lauren Edwards rank first and third in the PacWest in hitting percentage at .358 and .344, respectively. As a team, APU is second in the conference in hitting percentage (.232) and third in digs (17.54).

LOOKING BACK AT THE SEASON SERIES:
Point Loma and Azusa Pacific split their two-game season series. Each team won at home via the sweep. In the first meeting, Dwyer had 12 kills and just one error in 24 attempts (.458%) to lead the Sea Lions to a victory in which it outscored APU in the three sets 75-46. The next match came at APU. PLNU played without its setter Wedemeyer, who was recovering from injury, and lost 25-18, 25-14 and 25-19. PLNU hit .000 in the match and no Sea Lion was in double-figure kills.

DWYER NAMED PACWEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Point Loma junior middle blocker Alyssa Dwyer has been named the Pacific West Conference Women's Volleyball Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 11-17. Dwyer led the Sea Lions to a 2-0 week by averaging 4.0 points per set over eight sets. She totaled 34 kills, an ace and 10 block assists to wind up averaging 5.00 points per set – fourth-best in the PacWest for the week.

Dwyer also tied for fifth in kills per set (4.25) and in blocks per set (1.25), showing off her outstanding offensive and defensive capabilities. She produced one of the highest hitting percentages in the league for the week, finishing third in the PacWest with a .366 mark. She committed just eight errors while recording her 34 kills during 71 chances.

FLORIDA AWAITS:
The match between PLNU and APU will determine which team receives the automatic bid from the West Region. The winner will advance to the NCCAA Championships in Kissimmee, Florida on Dec. 5-7.
