Rhoads' 30 points leads PLNU to first PacWest win

Box Score

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Callie Rhoads scored 30 points and the Sea Lions' bench came through with 31 points to lead the Point Loma women's basketball team to a 78-46 win over Dominican (CA) on Saturday, Dec. 7.

The win is the first win for PLNU in PacWest play this season as it moved its record to 3-4 on the season (1-2 PacWest). Dominican is still looking for its first win of the season as it dropped to 0-8 (0-2 PacWest).

Rhoads' hot shooting hand continued on Saturday as she posted her first career 30-point game. She hit 7-of-11 shots from behind the arc and 11-of-17 overall. This was her third time in her previous four matches she has set a new career-high for scoring.

Erin Andersen led a 30-point bench effort with 11 points, one short of her season-high. She went 3-for-3 from the field, including hitting her only trey and 4-of-5 free throws. Madison West added nine points, and Jordan Ligons and Anna Viettry each added four.

Savannah Erskine helped propel a strong defensive effort for Point Loma as they held DU to 23 points in each half. Erskine had a PacWest season-best 10 steals in just 27 minutes. PLNU would force DU into 27 turnovers in the contest and outscore them 28-6 in points off turnovers. The Sea Lions' defense held the Penguins to 29 percent shooting, while PLNU knocked down 43 percent of its shots.

"We had two tough losses (on this trip) but our team is good at learning what we need to do to improve," said junior forward Erin Andersen. "We played as a team and played them confidently and very hard.

"Our bench played really well too," Andersen added. "We are confident in each other and once one player made a play we really took off."

Dominican had the early lead at 23-22 before Point Loma scored the last 11 points of the half to lead 33-23 at the break. The Sea Lions would keep that run going in the second half as it outscored the Penguins 15-3 in the opening five minutes to build a 20-point lead. They would lead by as many as 34 points in the second half.

"I am excited about our team," Andersen continued. "If we keep playing with confidence we will have a great season."

Point Loma will continue its season next Saturday (Dec. 14) on the road at Dixie State. Tipoff is scheduled for Noon (PST).
