Sea Lions faces Lancers, Sunbirds this week

WHAT'S HAPPENING:
The Point Loma men's basketball team looks to play the role of spoiler this week as it travels to California Baptist on Thursday (Feb. 21) and hosts Fresno Pacific on Saturday (Feb. 23). Thursday's game will tipoff at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday's game at 4:00 p.m.

A LOOK AT THE SEA LIONS:
Point Loma is coming off a 79-61 win over Hawaii Hilo last Saturday (Feb. 16). The Sea Lions are now 5-18 on the season and 2-13 in the Pacific West Conference. The Sea Lions continue to hang their hats on the defensive side of the ball where they lead the league in scoring defense (60.1 ppg) and rank second in 3-point percentage defense (.320).

Oivind Lundestad has taken over the team-lead in scoring with 7.1 ppg. He is hitting nearly 38 percent of his shots from behind the arc and leads PLNU with 36 treys on the season. AJ Ussery has done a little bit of everything for the Sea Lions this season and it has shown up in the PacWest stats. He ranks 11th in rebounding (6.6), eighth in offensive rebounds (2.0) and seventh in blocked shots (1.1).

A LOOK AT CALIFORNIA BAPTIST:
The Lancers are eighth in the PacWest standings with a 7-8 record (13-10 overall). They have lost their last three games and four of the last five. Anthony Cosentino leads four student-athletes in double-figures with 12.3 ppg. Andrew Fisk is leading the club with 7.0 rebounds per game to go along with his 11.3 points a contest. He ranks fifth in the conference with a 61.7 shooting percentage. PLNU dropped its previous contest to the Lancers this season 59-53.

A LOOK AT FRESNO PACIFIC:
The Sunbirds sit fourth in the PacWest standings with a 11-4 conference mark (16-7 overall). They have won nine of their last 10 games, with their only blemish coming on the road to conference leader Dixie State. FPU leads the conference in scoring offense with 87.7 ppg. They also sit atop the rankings in steals (9.4) and turnover margin (+3.3). John Taylor leads the team and the PacWest in scoring average with 25.3 ppg. He is third in the league in 3-pointers made (58) and steals (1.9). Malcolm Griffin is also one of three other student-athletes averaging double-figures. He sits at 17.4 ppg, while Matt Samuels averages 12.5 ppg and Antonio Credit 11.1 ppg. PLNU lost to FPU earlier this season in Fresno, 76-65.

NEXT UP:
The PLNU men's basketball team will wrap up regular season play next Saturday (Mar. 2) when Dixie State. The game will also be Senior Night. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
