A LOOK AT THE SEA LIONS:
PLNU comes into the weekend winners of seven of its last eight, and nine of their last 11. The recent run has moved the Sea Lions into sixth place in the PacWest standings with a 10-7 record (14-11 overall).
Even with the recent streak into the top six in the conference, regardless Point Loma is not eligible for the PacWest tournament or NCAA postseason during their transition to NCAA Division II. However they are looking pretty good to qualify for the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association (NCCAA) West Regional playoffs. With the Sea Lions sweeping in Hawaii and Azusa Pacific falling to Hawaii Pacific, PLNU passed APU in the Burbridge Power Rating (7.160 to 7.087) to climb into the second spot in the region. Both teams are chasing California Baptist who leads the region with a 7.979 Burbridge Rating. A four-team playoff is the likely scenario on Tuesday, Mar. 5 and Thursday, Mar. 7, with Point Loma and Azusa Pacific playing each other (#2 vs. #3, sit to be determined) and Hope University (representing the Golden State Athletic Conference) taking on Cal Baptist (#4 vs. #1). The winner of the tournament would advance to the NCCAA national tournament March 13-16 in Winona Lake, Indiana.
The Sea Lions hate to see the month of February end. PLNU went 7-1 during the month and put together a six-game winning streak, which included a road sweep of the Hawaii schools.
Callie Rhoads and
Jessica Escorza stepped up their play during the month as each averaged 17.0 points per game. Rhoads now leads the team and ranks eighth in the league with 14.7 ppg. She ranks second in the PacWest in 3-point field goal percentage (44.8) and minutes played (33.0).
Andrea Campbell continues to lead the conference in blocked shots with 3.0 per game.
Savannah Erskine is second in assists (4.4) and fourth in steals (2.7).
SENIOR SENDOFF:
Saturday's contest will mark the final regular season home game for seniors
Andrea Campbell and
Renee Crawford. Both women have been four-year letterwinners and have combined to play in nearly 200 games for the Sea Lions. There will be a ceremony before the game to honor both Crawford and Campbell.
SCOUTING DIXIE STATE:
The Red Storm is 13-12 on the season and leads PLNU by one game for fifth place in the PacWest standings (11-6). DSC has won three of its last four games on the road. Johnna Brown leads the team and ranks fourth in the PacWest with 16.3 ppg. She is also pacing the league with 12.0 rebounds while shooting 49.8 percent from the field. As a team, Dixie State averages 70 ppg and outrebounds its opponent by +3.8 per contest. DSC earned an 80-63 victory when these teams met earlier in the season in St. George, Utah.
Andrea Campbell posted career-highs with 13 points and 15 rebounds for PLNU but Dixie State never trailed in the second half en route to the win. Brown had 13 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Red Storm.
NEXT GAMES:
The PLNU women's basketball team will be competing in the NCCAA West Regional on Tuesday. Mar. 5. This weekend's games will decide if that game will be played at Point Loma or Azusa Pacific. Tip time is tentatively scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
