Trio leads PLNU to upset of Sea Warriors

[Box score]

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Savannah Erskine, Jessica Escorza and Callie Rhoads combined to score 64 points to lead the Point Loma women's basketball team to an 87-80 upset over Hawaii Pacific on Saturday (Feb. 9) to open its open its road trip.

The Sea Lions have now won three straight and five of their last six to even their season record at 10-10 and Pacific West Conference record at 6-6. The win also snaps Hawaii Pacific's five-game home winning streak. The Sea Warriors (13-5, 9-3 PacWest) entered the game second in the conference standings.

Erskine scored a career-best 26 points, including hitting all 12 shots at the charity stripe, and dished out seven assists to lead four Sea Lions in double-figures. Rhoads went 8-of-14 from the field, including hitting four treys, to register her second straight game with 20 or more points. Escorza reached double-figures for the third straight game with 18 points. She went 10-of-13 at the free throw line and also added eight rebounds and four steals.

The 25 free throws for PLNU was a season-best. They have now reached double-digits in free throws made during each of the past six games, in which PLNU has gone 5-1. Point Loma also dominated in the paint, outscoring HPU 28-14.

PLNU only trailed at the 6-2 mark in the first half. That deficit was quickly erased on a jumper by Andrea Campbell and an old-fashion 3-point play by Escorza. PLNU would extend their run to 13-0 to go up 15-6. The Sea Lions would take their largest lead of the half into the locker room as Carlotta Kloppenburg connected on a 3-pointer as time expired to put PLNU up 14 (44-30). Kloppenburg would finish the game with 13 points and four 3-point baskets.

The Sea Warriors would chip away at the lead in the second half and cut the Sea Lions' advantage to five points with four minutes left. Kloppenburg would then hit a 3-pointer, and following a basket by HPU, Erskine and Escorza hit back-to-back layups to push the lead back to double-figures.

Skye Savini led Hawaii Pacific with 25 points and eight rebounds. Melody Ladrido also came off the bench to score 21 points for the Sea Warriors.

Campbell added a game-high 10 rebounds and four blocks for Point Loma.
