SAN DIEGO -
Todd Campbell scored a team-high 11 points on his Senior Night, but Point Loma could not contain Dixie State Saturday evening (Mar. 2) at Golden Gymnasium, falling 68-47 to the Red Storm in their season finale.
Campbell, the Sea Lions' lone senior, also grabbed seven rebounds in his final game in the Point Loma uniform.
With the win, Dixie State (20-6, 15-3 PacWest) clinched the Pacific West Conference regular season title as well as the top seed in the PacWest Tournament next week at Azusa Pacific. The loss dropped the Sea Lions' final regular season record to 5-21 and 2-16 PacWest.
PLNU shot just 30 percent for the game, and 15 percent (4-of-27) from long range. Meanwhile, the Red Storm has red-hot from all over the court, shooting 56 percent from the field and 60 percent (6-of-10) from 3-point land.
However, the Green and Gold's PacWest-leading defense held Dixie 10 points below their season average while forcing 19 turnovers.
The Sea Lions opened the game with a five straight points run off a 3-pointer from
Oivind Lundestad and a layup from Campbell.
But Dixie State, ranked fourth in the NCAA Division II Western Region, exploded for a 21-2 run over the next several minutes to effectively put the game out of reach early. By halftime, the Red Storm led 39-17.
The deficit ballooned to as many as 28 points midway through the second half. Then
Taylor Wetherell scored all seven of his points in a 9-0 surge that cut the lead to 19, and the Green and Gold kept the game competitive until the final buzzer sounded on their rebuilding season.
Though the Sea Lions ended the year with a record below .500, there is much to look forward to next season. With Campbell being the only player to graduate, the majority of this young PLNU squad will be back in the Fall with another year's experience under their belts.
Additionally, the Sea Lions will welcome back the services of
Marek Klassen,
Hayden Lescault and
Judd Welfringer, who all sat out this season as redshirts.
