SAN DIEGO – Johnna Brown had a double-double and hit a buzzer beating shot to help the Dixie State Red Storm spoil senior night for the Point Loma women's basketball team, 67-65, on Saturday (Mar. 2).
The game was the last in the regular season for both teams. PLNU ends the regular season at 14-12 and in seventh place in the Pacific West Conference with a 10-8 record. The Sea Lions' season will continue with postseason play in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) West Regional on Tuesday, Mar. 5 at Azusa Pacific beginning at 5:30 p.m. Dixie State also ends the regular season at 14-12. It will continue its season next week at the PacWest tournament where they will be the No. 4 seed with a 12-6 conference record.
Brown scored 17 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and had five assists to pace the Red Storm, but it was her final points and last rebound that left PLNU fans shaking their head. After
Jessica Escorza knocked down a pair of free throws for the Sea Lions to tie up the game at 65-65, Dixie State held the ball for the final shot.
The Red Storm worked the ball around to Becca Thomas for a jumper at the free throw line with less than two seconds left. Her shot hit the bottom corner of the hoop and the backboard and looked to be shooting out of bounds before Brown snagged the ball. She grabbed the ball on the baseline as she fell out of bounds, turned and shot the ball from out of bounds over the top corner of the backboard, and her shot found nothing but net for the win as Brown's teammates stormed the court in joy.
That offensive rebound was Dixie State's 22nd of game as it dominated on the glass 50-37, including 22-6 in offensive boards and 22-8 in second chance points.
Escorza scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Sea Lions. She has now scored 52 points over her last two games at Golden Gymnasium. PLNU also got 15 points, six rebounds and five assists from
Savannah Erskine, and 11 points from
Callie Rhoads.
Andrea Campbell had eight points, nine rebounds and six blocks on her senior night.
The Sea Lions will now prepare for the NCCAA West Regionals which will take place on Tuesday and Thursday of next week. PLNU will take on Azusa Pacific on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., and the winner of that game will face the winner of California Baptist and Hope International on Thursday.
