LA JOLLA, Calif. - After a tough opening day at the UC San Diego Invitational the Point Loma volleyball team rebounded with its biggest win of the season as it took down No. 18 Cal State San Bernardino, 26-24, 25-22, 22-25, 23-25 and 15-12, in its first match on Saturday (Sept. 14).
The win snaps a two match slide for the Sea Lions who are now 6-2 on the season. The loss drops CSUSB to 3-4.
Heather Leavitt and
Alyssa Dwyer were once again the driving forces behind the Sea Lions' offensive attack. Leavitt hammered down a season-high 27 kills to lead all scorers. Dwyer was a dominant force in the middle. The junior from Gilbert, Ariz., had 14 kills and hit .435 while adding eight blocks (four solo).
The Sea Lions also received double-doubles from both
Kelli LeClair and
Delaney McCraney. LeClair had 16 kills and 16 digs, while McCraney posted 12 kills and 12 digs, respectively.
Savannah Wedemeyer also turned in a career-high 62 assists in the five-set match and added a .750 hitting percentage as three of her four attack attempts found the ground.
PLNU held a 12-6 edge in service aces.
Point Loma will be back in action tonight to take on Cal Poly Pomona at 5:00 p.m.
