PLNU drops five set match to Cal Poly Pomona

Box Score

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Four Point Loma volleyball student-athletes recorded double-doubles in the match but every member of the Sea Lions will leave the gym shaking their head after the PLNU fell in five sets to Cal Poly Pomona, 20-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 17-15, to close out the UCSD Invitational on Saturday night (Sept. 14).

With the loss the Sea Lions went 1-3 at the tournament and are now 6-3 on the season. The win moves CPP to 2-6 on the year.

Point Loma quickly jumped out in front in the match by taking the first two sets. The Sea Lions outhit CPP .237 to .176 in the first set and then .206 to .065 in the second to seize the 2-0 lead in the match. However, even with the Broncos on the ledge the Sea Lions could not seal the deal.

Cal Poly Pomona bounced back to win the third and fourth sets in tight fashion to push the match to a deciding fifth set. In the final set neither team could gain the competitive edge and go up any more than two points. The set would be tied at 8-8, 11-11 and 13-13. PLNU had the first chance at game-point when they went in front 14-13 but Elle Moffatt knotted the match back up with a kill. Moffatt would also come through again with another crucial kill after Point Loma had gone in front 15-14 on a finisher by Alyssa Dwyer. However, CPP would answer by scoring the final three points of the set to earn the victory.

"We had a great win over a ranked team today, but we are still trying to find the consistency we need to be competitive in every match," said PLNU head coach Sarah Gustin. "Consistency will be key for us this season in order to be successful."

Heather Leavitt posted a match-high 21 kills and added 12 digs for her third straight double-double and second consecutive match with 20 or more kills for PLNU. Alyssa Dwyer also had another very effective match in the middle with a team-leading 23 points as she had seven blocks (three solo) to go along with her 18 kills. Point Loma also received double-doubles from Savannah Wedemeyer who had a team-leading 25 digs and 55 assists, Delaney McCraney with 10 kills and 10 digs, and Kelli LeClair with 10 kills and 17 digs.

Jessica Doerner led CPP with 19 kills. Moffatt added 16 kills and a .429 hitting percentage.

The Point Loma volleyball team will now start its 20-match Pacific West Conference schedule. The Sea Lions will go to the Bay Area to open conference play. They will face Dominican on Thursday (Sept. 19), Academy of Art on Friday (Sept. 20) and Holy Names on Saturday (Sept. 21).
