Strong second half lifts PLNU over Hawaii Hilo

Box Score

SAN DIEGO - Point Loma produced its highest scoring output of the year in a dominant 3-0 home victory over Hawaii Hilo Saturday.

Jessica Van Loo, Natalie Swift and Tara Kracy each found the net in the second half, and the Sea Lions (3-3-1, 2-0-1) remain undefeated in PacWest Conference play while handing the Vulcans (4-1-1) their first loss of the season.

"I thought it was a great team effort today," said Head Coach Tim Hall. "They were trying to play purposeful soccer, and it worked out. The tactical concepts and the technical work were really good.

The Sea Lions owned the game from the opening whistle, firing 18 shots (nine on goal) during the game.

Meanwhile, their defense played relentlessly. The Vulcans managed just three shots all game with only one on goal, which Lupe Herrera saved beautifully.

The two squads played the first half to a draw, though PLNU clearly had the edge. The Sea Lions outshot Hilo 8-1 in the period.

"I think they not only played physically well, but they played mentally well," said Hall. "I was really proud of them."

After halftime, the Sea Lions started to find their groove offensively. Codi Cameron launched a shot from close to the goal, but Hilo goalkeeper knocked the ball away. But Van Loo was there to knock in the deflection for her second goal of the season.

Swift scored her fourth goal of the season in the 73rd minute after beating the keeper off a through ball from Leah Porter. Swift's strike put PLNU up 2-0.

The Sea Lions got their clincher in the 83rd minute of the game. Porter fired a corner kick into the box, and Kracy rose above the crowd to head in her first goal of the season.

PLNU will continue their homestand Tuesday Oct. 1 against BYU-Hawaii. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
