PLNU hosts pair of Cougar opponents this week

THIS WEEK:
After its week-long road trip to Hawaii, the Point Loma women's basketball team will return home to host Cal State San Marcos in an exhibition game on Wednesday (Jan. 15) at 7:00 p.m., before taking on conference rival Azusa Pacific on Friday (Jan. 17) at 5:30 p.m.

The game against Azusa Pacific will be sponsored by American Christian Credit Union. During halftime of the men's contest on that same day there will be a ceremony to honor the 2013 PLNU volleyball team that won the NCCAA National Championship.

GREEN SEA FANS UNITE:
The Green Sea, which is the student cheering section at all home events, has made the contest against APU one of their featured games of the season. Members of the Green Sea will be set up at a table in Golden Gymnasium selling T-Shirts ($2) and signing up new members. The Green Sea will cheer and support the Sea Lions through both basketball doubleheaders and then have a dance after the games.

A LOOK AT THE SEA LIONS:
Point Loma went 1-2 on their road trip to Hawaii and is now 7-6 on the season and 5-4 in the PacWest conference. The 5-4 record for the Sea Lions has them sitting sixth in the conference. Callie Rhoads leads PLNU and ranks fifth in the PacWest with 16.0 ppg. She also ranks third in 3-point baskets (35). Savannah Erskine is leading the league in both steals (4.4) and assists (5.5). She is also averaging 10.6 ppg and is shooting .825 percent from the free throw line (eighth in the PacWest). Abby Boorman is leading the PacWest with 2.7 blocks per game.

As a team, PLNU is averaging 67.8 ppg and ranks third in the PacWest in scoring defense at 66.2 ppg. The Sea Lions lead the league in blocked shots (4.3) and steals. They also rank second in the league in both 3-point percentage (.344) and turnover margin (+3.1), and third in free throw percentage (.727).

A LOOK AT CAL STATE SAN MARCOS:
The Cougars are 8-13 on the season, but have dropped four of their last five games. Cassie Damyanovich leads CSUSM with 14.1 ppg. She has made 43 of the 74 treys for the Cougars this season and is shooting .350 percent from behind the arc. Heather Thompson is averaging a double-double with 10.0 ppg and 10.3 rebounds. Sherika Miller (12.0 ppg) is also averaging in double-figures for Cal State San Marcos. As a team, CSUSM is averaging 64.3 ppg and allowing 70.3 ppg. It has outrebounded its opponents by +3.5 per game.

A LOOK AT AZUSA PACIFIC:
APU is 8-4 on the season and 6-0 in the PacWest Conference. Kelly Hardeman paces the Cougars and ranks third in the PacWest with 17.9 ppg. She is also tied for the team-lead in rebounds with 8.3 per game. Sendy Valles is the other Cougar averaging 8.3 rebounds. She is also scoring 15.3 ppg. Allison Greene gives APU its third double-figure scoring option. Greene is averaging 13.3 ppg and leads the squad with 5.1 assists. As a team, APU is pacing the league in scoring defense (62.1 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (.355).

NEXT WEEK:
Point Loma will host just one game next week when Dixie State (7-7, 5-3 PacWest) come to town for a Saturday (Jan. 25) showdown at 2:00 p.m.
