Abby Boorman recorded her second straight double-double with a career-high 19 point and 13 rebounds for the Point Loma women's basketball team but California Baptist took the lead on big first half run and then held on for the 72-60 win on Monday, Jan. 20.
Kamille Diaz and Erin Asher had 17 points apiece for the Lancers (8-8, 6-4 PacWest) who have won five straight games in the Pacific West Conference. Asher also added eight rebounds and six assists.
The loss was the first for PLNU (8-7, 6-5 PacWest) in its last three conference contests. Boorman went 8-of-15 from the field and was 3-for-3 from the free throw line en route to the senior notching a game-high 19. The forward also had four blocks to increase her PacWest lead.
The Lancers used a 21-5 first half run to turn a five-point deficit (19-14) into an 11-point lead (35-24) and they would never trail again. PLNU was down 13 at the half (45-32) but fought back to cut the lead to six points on an
Erin Andersen jumper with 6:11 remaining. The Sea Lions would get the lead down to five points with 2:35 left on a layup by
Callie Rhoads but they went 0-for-6 from the field the rest of the way to fall on the road.
Savannah Erskine scored 12 points and
Callie Rhoads had 11 for a PLNU squad which had just seven turnovers in the contest.
Overall the game was very even in the box score. Each team took 70 shots with Point Loma making 25 and Cal Baptist 26. The difference came from behind the arc and at the free throw line. CBU outscored PLNU by 12 from 3-point range and from six at the charity stripe.
Point Loma's next game will be Saturday, Jan. 25 at home against Dixie State. Tipoff will be at 2:00 p.m.
