Sea Warriors hit pair of late baskets to sink PLNU

HONOLULU - With her team trailing by three points and less than a minute remaining Skye Savini hit a pair of jumper, including the game-winner with just seven seconds remaining, to lift Hawaii Pacific to a 79-78 win over the Point Loma women's basketball team on Wednesday, Jan. 8.

The win moved HPU to 8-4 on the season and into a tie for third place in the Pacific West Conference with Dixie State at 4-2. The loss evened the Sea Lions' record at 6-6 on the season and 4-4 in the PacWest.

Skye finished the game with 30 points and 10 rebounds. She hit 12-of-20 shots from the field and 4-of-7 shots from 3-point range. Morganne Comstock was a dominant force on the glass for the Sea Warriors as she grabbed a PacWest season-best 21 boards. She also added 18 points and five steals for the double-double.

Erin Andersen led three Sea Lions student-athletes in double-figures with 19 points. She was 6-of-9 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the free throw line. She also had team-leading four steals. Savannah Erskine chipped in with 16 points and seven assists, while Callie Rhoads added 15 points.

Point Loma led 40-37 at halftime and extended their advantage to seven points on a layup by Andersen with 15:10 remaining. Three minutes later HPU took the lead on a 9-0 run. The teams then traded baskets and the lead until the game was tied at 71-71 with 2:55 remaining. Rhoads then hit layups on the Sea Lions' next two possessions but each time Savini answered with a basket of her own to keep the game tied.

Madison West gave Point Loma a three-point lead on a trey with 1:13 remaining. Another basket by Savini brought the Sea Warriors back to within one with 48 seconds left. Point Loma then missed a 3-pointer on its next possession opening the door for HPU to respond. Savini put Hawaii Pacific up by one point on another jumper with seven seconds left. Point Loma had a chance to answer but Erskine's layup fell off the rim and Comstock grabbed her 21st rebound of the night to secure the HPU win.

Point Loma will look to earn its first win on the road trip this Friday (Jan. 10) when it visits BYU-Hawaii at 7:00 p.m. (PST).
