Box Score HONOLULU -
Michaela Maes scored the only goal of the match in the 18th minute and the Point Loma women's soccer team extended its shutout streak to 305 minutes with a 1-0 blanking of Chaminade on Saturday, Oct. 11.
The Sea Lions has now shutout their last three opponents, and are sitting alone in first place in the Pacific West Conference at 6-0-0 (7-2-0 overall). They have also won five straight road contests, including going 4-0 on their recent Hawaii road trip. The loss drops Chaminade to 2-8-0 on the season and to 2-5-0 in the PacWest.
The lone goal of the match was scored by two Sea Lions that even start and had been in the match less than 80 seconds. It was the first time coach
Tim Hall had gone to his bench in the match but he called on both
Amanda Mitchell and
Michaela Maes to sub in during the 17th minute. Mitchell would dish the ball off to Maes 35 yards away and she took a chance, shooting it towards the goal. The shot sailed directly towards the crossbar and it took a Sea Lion bounce into the net for the goal 18:01 in the beginnings of the 19th minute.
This would be the only score of the contest but it was not the Sea Lions' only chance. PLNU outshot Chaminade 19-1 in the match, including 7-0 in shots on goal. However, it was only Maes' shot that would ever find the net as the Sea Lions had to eke out another tight victory on the road.
Point Loma goal keeper
Ariel Oriarte did not even have to make a save en route to recording her fourth shutout in her last five matches. She continues to pace the PacWest with a .272 goals against average.
The Sea Lions will now return home to start a five-match homestand from Oct. 16-Nov. 1. They will open with Dominican (CA) on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 3:30 p.m.
