Box Score SAN DIEGO - The Point Loma volleyball team started a new winning streak as it closed out its homestand with a 25-19, 25-22, 19-25, 25-14 victory over Academy of Art on Saturday, Oct. 11.
PLNU (12-6) has now won three straight matches to own a 9-1 record halfway through its Pacific West Conference schedule. The Urban Knights slipped to 3-6 in the conference (8-9 overall) with the loss.
Alyssa Dwyer bounced back from one of her lowest hitting percentages of the season on Friday night to post a team-leading 14 kills and .464 hitting percentage in the win over ART U. The senior from Gilbert, Ariz., had only one error in 28 attempts. She also matched a season-best with seven blocks and posted a match-high 18.5 points.
"(Alyssa) had a really good, aggressive focus about her tonight," said Point Loma head coach
Jonathan Scott. "She is always aggressive but her even her offspeed shots were aggressive and to the spot."
Dwyer was not the only efficient hitter for Point Loma as it hit .333 as a team and five Sea Lions posted a .300 or better hitting percentage.
Heather Leavitt had 13 kills for her 17th match of the season in double-figures. She also hit .345 and added 12 digs for her 10th double-double of the season.
Delaney McCraney and
Bree Vieth both chipped in with nine kills.
As always it was Savannah Wedeneyer distributing the ball for the Sea Lions. She had 50 assists and three service aces in the four sets and also matched a season-best with four blocks.
"When we can handle that pass and handle that dig with a decent enough amount of control Savannah is usually going to make a good decision and that puts our very good hitters into excellent situations," said Scott.
Point Loma's next stretch of matches will be a test for the Sea Lions as they play five of their next six matches on the road, including three matches in three days in Hawaii starting on Thursday, Oct. 16 at Hawaii Pacific.
