Red Storm wins battle of unbeaten PacWest teams

Box Score

ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Point Loma and Dixie State volleyball teams squared off Saturday with each sporting perfect 6-0 conference records and tied for first place in the Pacific West Conference. Unfortunately for PLNU fans it would be the Red Storm that would emerge with the unblemished league record as they won the match in four sets over the Sea Lions, 25-20, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-23.

With the win Dixie State (10-5, 7-0 PacWest) takes sole possession of first place in the conference. The Red Storm and BYU-Hawaii (8-3, 5-0 PacWest) are the only two teams remaining with perfect conference records. The loss snaps the Sea Lions (9-6, 6-1 PacWest) six-match winning streak.

Heather Leavitt would post a match-best 20 kills, with only four errors, but it would not be enough to overcome a collective offensive attack from the Red Storm. Four student-athletes for Dixie State had at least 10 kills, led by Edithza Urias 14 finishers.

"We never got in a rhythm or to the point where we felt like we were playing Point Loma volleyball," said PLNU head coach Jonathan Scott. "You have to hand it to Dixie State for establishing the tone."

Point Loma had its best match of the year at the net outblocking DSC 11.0-6.0. Those 11 blocks were a season-best for PLNU, three more than its previous season-high.

"The blocking is something we have continued to work on and it showed tonight," Scott added.

Apart from the collective offensive effort the Red Storm also had the advantage with 11 service aces, six more than the Sea Lions. Maddie Rex had four aces to go along with her 13 kills and 12 digs.

The Sea Lions will now come home to face three opponents from the Bay Area next week. PLNU will open with Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday, Oct. 8 before hosting Dominican (CA) on Friday and Academy of Art on Saturday.
