Box Score HONOLULU, Hawaii -
Amanda Mitchell and
Natalie Swift each scored a goal and the Sea Lions' defense recorded its third shutout of the season to carry the Point Loma women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Hawaii Pacific in a Pacific West Conference showdown on Monday, Oct. 6.
This was the fourth straight conference victory for PLNU (5-2-0, 4-0-0 PacWest). The Sea Lions have outscored their opponents 7-2 in conference play, which includes two shutouts. The loss snaps a two-match winning streak for HPU (5-3-1, 2-2-0 PacWest), which knocked off PacWest preseason favorites Azusa Pacific on Saturday, 3-1.
Mitchell made the most of her first start of the season. She put the Sea Lions on the board in the 13th minute after corralling a loose ball off a corner kick from
Shelby Murphy in the box and knocking it into the back of the net to give the Sea Lions the early 1-0.
The score would remain the same through halftime and up until the 55th minute when
Natalie Swift scored on a penalty kick to extend the lead to 2-0. This was the first goal of the season for both Swift and Mitchell.
From there it was the PLNU defense that would keep HPU scoreless en route to recording the third shutout of the season for Point Loma, and the second for goal keeper
Ariel Oriarte. She made four saves in shutting out the Sharks.
"I am proud of these women for getting the result in tough conditions," said Point Loma head coach
Tim Hall. "We are young but we are finding a way to get it done.
"Once again though we played a good first half and a poor second half," added Hall. "We have to find a way to put 90 minutes together and not split our play between two halves."
The Sea Lions will face two more opponents on their trip to Hawaii. They will take on BYU-Hawaii on Thursday, Oct. 9 and Chaminade on Saturday, Oct. 11.
