Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

PLNU stumbles in second game of PacWest/CCAA

AZUSA, Calif. - Saturday was just not the Sea Lions' day. One day after upsetting the No. 2 team in the country the Point Loma women's basketball team fell short against Cal State Dominguez Hills as they shot just 20 percent in a 71-42 loss at the PacWest/CCAA Conference Challenge on Saturday, Nov. 15.
Ā
PLNU (1-1) took care of the ball and the Toros (1-1) only shot 40 percent, but the Sea Lions simply could not put the ball in the hoop. They went just 11-for-55 from the field all game, including only making five baskets in the first half. Madison West led the team with 10 points. She was the only Sea Lion to make three shots in the game.
Ā
The game started well for Point Loma as they got a turnover on the Toros' first possession and converted that into a 3-pointer by West on an assist from Anna Viettry. Later after the teams traded baskets a Jessica Escorza-layup gave Point Loma a 9-7 lead with 14:27 remaining in the half.
Ā
From that point PLNU went ice cold, making just one shot the rest of the half. CSUDH outscored PLNU 30-5 over the final 14:27 in the first half and took a 37-14 lead into halftime. The Sea Lions never got closer than the 23-point halftime margin in the second half.
Ā
"We were excited about how we played last night, and then tonight we came out flat and were never really in it," said Point Loma head coach Bill Westphal. "Cal State Dominguez Hills was ready from the opening tip and never let up. They have a very good team and are going to be tough this year.Ā

The Sea Lions will try to get back in the win column on Wednesday, Nov. 19 when it hosts Bethesda in its home opener at 7:00 p.m.Ā
